Public Workshops

Developing and Implementing an
Outward Mindset

This workshop prompts a shift to an outward mindset and equips participants with tools to build self-awareness, accountability, and collaboration.

In this workshop, participants learn the difference between an inward mindset (a myopic focus on personal objectives) and an outward mindset (taking into account one's impact on others). They begin to discover the extent to which they have been working from an inward mindset and understand the implications of this mindset on their work and those around them. Understanding of the negative effects of an inward mindset awakens in participants a desire to adopt an outward mindset approach in their work.

This interactive, two-day course allows participants to thoroughly explore and internalize key concepts in discussions led by an Arbinger-certified facilitator. The course is punctuated by videos, individual and group exercises, one-on-one sharing, and application of the tools to on-the-job situations facing the participants.

As part of this training, employees receive eight weekly videos illustrating the outward mindset in practice, with calls to action that invite employees to consider, implement, and operationalize an outward mindset in their day-to-day work. The video pack includes a guidebook with exercises for use with each video. The videos are especially effective when viewed and discussed by team members as a group.

Participants will learn to:

  • Regularly assess the impact of their mindset and behaviors
  • Work in collaborative, fulfilling, and effective ways
  • Assess their performance and hold themselves accountable for their impact
  • Positively influence others to change
  • Leverage tools to tackle individual and team challenges and resolve conflicts

Prerequisites

It is helpful to have read Leadership and Self Deception or The Outward Mindset, as the ideas presented in these books introduce the foundational concepts and language this workshop builds on.

Who Should Attend

This course is appropriate for individuals who want to:

  • Deepen their understanding of Arbinger’s principles and apply outward mindset tools in their own lives and work

  • Investigate the value of deploying Arbinger within their organization or team to initiate a larger transformative process

I’ve known about Arbinger for a while, having read the books a few years ago. And I’ve benefitted greatly from this workshop. I’ve learned a number of things that I was doing that I need to change—things I wouldn’t have recognized or realized otherwise, without experiencing it in this workshop. The books are great, you can learn a lot from them, but being in the workshop setting and having these interactions really makes a difference.

I’d recommend this course to anyone who wants to make a difference in an organization’s environment, in the way that people interact and work together to achieve results. This is the common-sense stuff that, in business, we tend to ignore. But it resonates with such impact that you realize if we implement this, we can make a major difference in our organization. We can be a lot more effective, employees can be a lot happier, we can achieve a lot better results.

Arbinger taught us how valuing people is the way to create change in an organization. With Arbinger’s tools, we created a place where you are invited to do your best and be creative—where politics aren’t needed. Now, we focus on what needs to be done.

I came without expectations. For me, it has been a life-changing experience. I think it’s useful not only in the business world, but in family and day-to-day life. Results will be much better if you apply this in your daily life. Everyone should come to this training. It’s useful, simple, but allows real change.

Ricio de la Puente  |  Executive Director  |  Alto Impacto

There were a number of times when I had just real ‘aha’ moments, where several times throughout the two days, I recognized how I was getting in my own way.
